Corridor

A video installation format by Rune Peitersen, 2007

The aim of the Corridor is to create a connection between two or more spaces which offers the passerby a visual experience of xxxxx. It is also aimed at making the viewer stop in order to experience the visuals thereby negating the normal purpose of a corridor.

The Corridor is a narrow passageway closed off in each end by a door. Integrated into the walls, and covering appr. 2/3 thereof, are rear projection screens. At the exit door there is a motion detector close to the floor which detects motion in the corridor from the ground up till appr. 50 cm from the floorlevel. The Corridor has a ceiling and a floor- it is a closed room. The colour of the inside of the Corridor depends on the version, i.e. the projected films.

When the viewer enters the Corridor, he sees a narrow hallway with a rear projected image on each side of the Corridor. The images are visually challenging and possibly haunting. They show vague or duochrome stylized imagery which can be either claustrofobic (like the silhouettes of trees in a dark forest) or give an illusion of unending space (like an ocean or mountain view ). In either event it represents a contrast to the rooms it connects; from the interior of a building all of a sudden the viewer finds himself in a (stylized) natural setting.

If the viewer chooses to walk through the Corridor to the exit door without pausing, nothing happens and the still images are all he sees as he moves past.

If, however, he stops and takes a closer look, the images start to move and ‘open up’ the space at a 90 degree angle to the corridor. This continues until he moves again or someone else enters the corridor in which cases the imagery freezes.
